Input Output (IO) and the Archimedes Research Unit of the Athena Research Center (Athena RC) are pleased to announce the launch of a new blockchain technology laboratory (BTL) in Athens to advance research at the intersection of decentralized AI, blockchain, and private healthcare.

Archimedes is a vibrant research hub whose wider mission is to build an AI excellence hub in Greece where the international research community can connect, groundbreaking ideas can thrive, and the next generation of scientists can emerge - positioning Greece as a leading player in AI and data science.

This strategic collaboration marks a significant investment in the future of industry-aligned, open-access research and a pivotal moment for decentralized innovation in Greece. This new research hub is dedicated to bridging the gap between foundational theory and industrial application. Under the leadership of principal investigator Professor Minos Garofalakis and co-investigators Professor Evangelos Markakis and Professor Spyros Voulgaris, the BTL will pioneer open-access research across blockchain technologies and decentralized systems.

Collaborative hub

Serving as a collaborative AI excellence hub, the BTL will engage a broad spectrum of academic and industry stakeholders. Central to this mission is a close partnership with leading Greek institutions – including the Athens University of Economics and Business, the University of Athens, and the Technical University of Crete. These alliances will leverage deep-seated expertise in cryptography, AI, and distributed systems to drive the laboratory’s research agenda.

By prioritizing open access, the BTL ensures that its foundational discoveries remain public, inviting close collaboration with both government and industry stakeholders to drive widespread adoption.

Vision: AI that respects privacy

The laboratory will focus on the frontier of decentralized AI and drive research into how blockchain can act as a secure layer for artificial intelligence.

By merging privacy-enhancing technologies, game theory, and distributed ledgers, the lab aims to decouple data access from data insight. This ensures that the next generation of AI is both powerful and private, allowing for the training of sophisticated models without ever exposing the underlying sensitive information.

Building next-generation healthcare applications

A primary objective of this BTL is to develop next-generation healthcare platforms that balance high-accuracy diagnostic AI with full patient privacy. To achieve this goal and work on supporting use cases, the laboratory will draw upon its established partnerships with major local medical centers, including the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens, the University Hospital of Thessaloniki, and the University Hospital of Ioannina.

This privacy-first approach means medical researchers can train highly accurate models on real-world datasets while ensuring that patient data never leaves the secure premises of the hospital.

Phased innovation

The BTL is launching with a multidisciplinary team of senior researchers, postdocs, and PhD students. The first year of operations is structured to move rapidly from foundational theory to functional prototypes, as follows:

  • Phase 1 (months 1-6): team formation, literature synthesis, and infrastructure setup.
  • Phase 2 (months 7-12): original research in decentralized governance, verifiable data provenance, and the development of a federated learning prototype.

Ecosystem impact

The impact of the new laboratory is designed for both scientific and societal purposes. During the first year, the lab plans to produce at least two major research papers for international conferences and host two significant workshops in Athens:

  1. Launch workshop (month 6): an introduction to the team and research objectives for the Athens research community.
  2. Year-end progress workshop: a presentation of research outputs and insights for external stakeholders.

Beyond the lab, the BTL will actively engage with the broader Greek ecosystem through open-source contributions to the Cardano ecosystem, guest lectures from global experts, and the development of a go-to-market pilot strategy for the Greek healthcare sector.

Named after the visionary who mastered the power of the lever, the Archimedes Research Unit is the perfect home for this collaboration. By aligning the strengths of Athena RC and IO, we are creating the leverage necessary to move some of the world’s most critical industries toward a more secure, decentralized future.

We look forward to sharing the innovations that will emerge from this exciting partnership.

Timelines and product features are not final and are not guaranteed; all future developments are subject to change.
